Finding Fiber Fabulous

"Unraveled" Contemporary New England Fiber Art -at the Remick Gallery in York

Lisa Grey "Becoming, Who I was, I am, and will be" detail - 2014

18 New England artists who investigate and experiment with fiber in various forms are exhibited at the Remick Gallery in York, until Dec 6. Curated by Mary Harding,  this exceptional show rewards a long and thoughtful look. With the emphasis on artistic expression, the works speak clearly in the visual language. Technical mastery is present as well.

Fiber art is dominated still by women artists. Historically, women often had little opportunity for artist expression, and turned to what they had available as medium: quilts, sewn garments, knits and wovens, and created masterful works in color and pattern, expression and communication. Happily, while there are many more avenues for women in the arts today, there are still people of both genders using the fiber mediums to convey ideas. Visit this show to see some wonderful examples.

Lisa Grey commands a wall with 32 abstracted square felt and fabric sewn portraits set in a contemporary grid:  "Becoming, Who I was, I am, and will be".

Katharine Cobey's "Portrait of Alzheimer's" is a heartbreaking knitted piece unraveling before your eyes.

Jodi Colella's collaborative piece "Hive" is an ongoing work with hundreds of individuals which changes and develops organically on is currently crawling all over the wall at the Remick.
